How to Store & Care for Your Electric Scooter in Winter | SUNNIGOO EU Guide

Winter is the season that quietly kills e-scooter batteries. Cold storage, deep discharge and damp garages do more damage in three months than a full year of daily riding — and almost all of it is preventable. This guide covers the five steps SUNNIGOO service technicians recommend before you park your scooter for the season.

1. Charge the battery to 50-60%, never 100% or 0%

Lithium-ion cells age fastest at full charge and at empty. Before storage, ride or charge to roughly 50-60% — three of the five battery-bar segments on most SUNNIGOO displays. A battery stored at 100% loses capacity measurably faster; a battery left at 0% for months may never wake up again.

2. Store indoors, dry and frost-free

The ideal winter home is a dry room between 10°C and 25°C — a hallway, an apartment corner or a heated garage. An unheated balcony or a damp shed exposes the battery, controller connectors and bearings to moisture and frost. If the scooter must stay in a cold garage, remove the battery and take it indoors: every SUNNIGOO platform battery (48V 13Ah, 15Ah and 21Ah variants) is removable precisely for this reason.

3. Clean and dry before you park it

Road salt, mud and rain residue corrode connectors, brake discs and folding mechanisms. Wipe the scooter down with a damp cloth (never a pressure washer — the jets defeat IP-rated seals), dry it, and leave it powered off for an hour before storing. Check the folding clamp and axle bolts for play while you are at it.

4. Top the battery up once a month

Batteries self-discharge a few percent per month, and a battery that drops below about 20% for weeks starts to suffer. Put a recurring reminder in your phone: once a month, plug the charger in for 2-3 hours until the display is back above 60%, then unplug. This single habit is the difference between a battery that lasts 3-5 years and one that needs replacement in spring.

5. Spring check before the first ride

Before the season starts: inflate tyres to the pressure printed on the sidewall (cold storage slowly bleeds air), spin each wheel to check the disc brakes drag, test both brake levers at walking speed, and torque-check the stem clamp and handlebar bolts. Ride the first 5 km gently — tyres and bearings stiffen over winter.

Riding through winter instead?

If you keep riding in the cold, expect 20-30% less range below 10°C — this is normal battery chemistry, not a fault. Ride with both hands, brake early on wet leaves and frost, and wipe the scooter dry after every wet ride. Our warranty terms cover manufacturing defects; proper care in winter protects the parts that warranties do not.
